We started our holiday weekend a little later than expected due to insane amounts of traffic but we finally arrived at my parents’  house in KY just before 1 am Thursday night. The last time we were there, they had just moved in and had barely unpacked so it was nice to see the place all organized and with actual grass in their yard. I love my parents’ house. It’s new construction in a fairly small town about 45 minutes away from a major metro area. Their town has all the essentials – Target, a mall, movie theater, large supermarkets, and just about every chain restaurant imaginable. Their house is a three bedroom, two bath ranch with a large unfinished walk-out basement that has endless possibilities. The deck is long but not very wide and it’s covered with two big outdoor ceiling fans. They don’t have any neighbors at the moment and their property backs up to a wooded creek bed. They have plenty of room for an in ground pool, gazebo, whatever they want to do. I think they’ll be there for quite some time and I can definitely see us sending our kids to grandma and grandpa’s house for a week or two in the summer.

My parents were so excited to see us that they were standing in their driveway at 1 a.m. waiting for us. Truthfully I think they were more excited to see their grand-pup. Ever since their dog (my dog) died about a year ago, they’ve missed having a big lovable ball of fur around. But not so much that they want another one of their own leaving hair all over the floors and furniture. My step-dad got up about an hour earlier than his usual just to take Champ outside and play fetch with him. After a breakfast of coffee and cream puffs, they made a HUGE lunch for us, officially christening their new gas/charcoal combo grill. We had steak (fillet Mignon), burgers, beans, potato salad, squash/zucchini, corn on the cob…the works. And it was just the four of us. We sat on the deck and enjoyed the unusually cool country air. I was sad we couldn’t stay longer. I’d love to help my mom do a little more decorating. It’s so much more fun decorating someone else’s house when you don’t have to worry about cleaning up all the junk and dog hair first. Every wall in their house is like a clean canvas and I was dying to throw some vibrant paint around and buy some funky accessories. My mom likes modern/contemporary design but all their stuff is traditional or country. Kind of a mis-match and I really wanted to help her fix it.

I wish I would’ve taken photos, but alas I was too busy stuffing my face.
